Innovations in Corrections Award

Our work providing rehabilitative programming has been widely lauded and recognized. In 2020, prior to our relaunch as Beyond Us & Them, our prison program received the "Innovations in Corrections Award" conferred by the American Correctional Association (ACA).  The award acknowledged the Council for Insight, Compassion & Resilience (formerly known as the Inmate Council Program), a six-month intervention where participating incarcerated individuals are trained to facilitate council sessions for their peers, empowering them to become positive agents of change, on the yard, and in their lives. The program launched in 2013 at Salinas Valley State Prison and has now expanded to serve thousands of incarcerated individuals across the state. CICR has now grown to over two dozen California state prisons and has supported many individuals who have received grants of parole as a result of transformation they credit this program with fostering.

Our partnership with the US Department of Justice COPS Office

In April of 2022, Beyond Us & Them entered into a formal partnership with the US Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Solutions (COPS) Office to work together to increase law enforcement awareness of the intersectionality of wellness, compassion, procedural justice and community building.

The COPS Office is the component of the US Department of Justice responsible for advancing the practice of community policing by the nation's state, local, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies through information and grant resources.
